Jon Rahm Slams Tour Mandate
Jon Rahm publicly criticized the DP World Tour's new rule requiring players to compete in at least six events, calling it "extortion." Rahm stated the mandate forces players into excessive travel and participation, potentially straining schedules and impacting personal priorities. This outburst could have ripple effects as other top golfers weigh their 2026 schedules.
The mandate at the center of the dispute requires LIV Golf members who wish to maintain their DP World Tour membership to compete in a minimum of six tournaments. Previously, the minimum for dual members was four events, a number Rahm says he would willingly agree to. His refusal to accept the two-event increase puts his future Ryder Cup eligibility in jeopardy. This new condition is a direct consequence of the ongoing turf war in professional golf. The DP World Tour and the PGA Tour strengthened their strategic alliance in 2022 to counter the emergence of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league. This partnership includes increased prize funds for the DP World Tour and a pathway for its top players to earn PGA Tour cards, effectively creating a more unified front against LIV. While Rahm stands in opposition, eight other LIV Golf members have accepted the DP World Tour's terms. This group includes his Ryder Cup teammate Tyrrell Hatton, as well as Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, David Puig, and Elvis Smylie. By agreeing, these players will pay any outstanding fines and participate in the required six events. Rahm's frustration also stems from a clause that allows the DP World Tour to dictate two of the six events he must play. He argues this level of control is unprecedented in his career as a dual member of both the PGA and DP World Tours. The Spanish golfer faces potential fines reported to be as high as $3 million for past LIV event participation.
