Microsoft seeks AI startups, cancels Claude Code

Microsoft is pursuing AI startup acquisitions while pulling back on one of the outside coding tools that had spread quickly inside the company. Reuters reported on May 13 that Microsoft is shopping for artificial-intelligence startups, including talks around Inception, as it prepares for a future less dependent on OpenAI. Two days later, The Verge reported that Microsoft has begun canceling many internal Claude Code licenses and steering developers to GitHub Copilot CLI instead. Together, the moves put Microsoft’s own developer platform at the center of a broader reshuffle in how it buys, builds and distributes AI tools. ### Which startup is Microsoft said to be eyeing? Reuters reported that Microsoft has been searching for AI startups that may be open to acquisition, citing five people familiar with the matter. One company in those discussions is Inception, a startup founded in 2024 by Stanford graduates and focused on large language models, according to Reuters and follow-on reports that cited it. Microsoft and Anthropic expanded their relationship on November 18, 2025, when Microsoft said Claude models would be available in Microsoft Foundry. Microsoft’s Azure blog said the platform would give customers access to Anthropic models alongside OpenAI models, and Anthropic said Claude would also appear in Microsoft 365 Copilot.
