Metallica Expands Vegas Sphere Residency
Heavy metal icons Metallica added 16 new dates to their 'Life Burns Faster' residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, extending the originally planned eight-show run well into 2027. General ticket sales for all dates began Friday, March 6, at 10 a.m. PT, responding to overwhelming demand for the immersive concert experience.
The "No Repeat Weekend" format is a carryover from the band's successful "M72 World Tour," which began in 2023. For each of the twelve weekends of the residency, Metallica will perform two completely different setlists without repeating a single song, a format designed to encourage fans to attend both nights. Drummer Lars Ulrich was inspired to book the residency after witnessing just "12 seconds" of U2's inaugural show at the venue in 2023, calling it "completely uncharted territory." The band and their longtime creative director, Dan Braun, are known for pushing technical boundaries, with their M72 tour featuring a massive in-the-round stage with 24 distinct LED screens and a complex audio system. The Sphere itself is a $2.3 billion marvel, standing 366 feet tall and boasting the world's largest high-resolution LED screen—a 160,000-square-foot, 16K wraparound display. Its audio system utilizes 1,600 speakers with beamforming technology to deliver precise sound to every seat in the 18,600-capacity venue. The initial eight shows for October 2026 sold out almost immediately, prompting the band to add dates incrementally until the residency reached 24 shows, extending through March 2027. The overwhelming response led Metallica to issue warnings about potential ticket scammers. Metallica follows successful residencies by U2 and Phish. U2's 40-show run grossed over $244 million and sold more than 660,000 tickets, setting a high bar for success in the new venue. Phish's four-night run was also a sell-out, praised for its quirky and immersive visuals that differed greatly from U2's production.
