Gucci-Owner Kering Overhauls Manufacturing
Luxury group Kering just hired an automotive executive to lead a massive manufacturing overhaul across its brands like Gucci and YSL. The goal is to boost efficiency, a move that often precedes inventory realignment and creates potential off-price opportunities.
The new executive is Stephane Noel, who will assume the role of Chief Industrial Officer on April 1, 2026. Noel joins Kering from automotive parts manufacturer Forvia and brings 30 years of international experience in managing large-scale manufacturing operations in countries like France, the UK, Poland, and China. This appointment is part of a larger restructuring under Kering's new CEO, Luca de Meo, who was previously the boss of automaker Renault. The overhaul establishes two new centers of excellence: "Industry" and "Clients." Noel will lead the industrial division, while Carlo Mocci has been named Chief Client Officer to manage marketing and customer strategy. Noel's mandate is to enhance both upstream and downstream supply chain performance, focusing on quality, compliance, and traceability. This move reflects a broader trend among luxury firms to gain tighter control over their supply chains, which have faced scrutiny over issues like worker abuse in some Italian leather goods factories. The push for efficiency comes as Kering's flagship brand, Gucci, faces significant headwinds. After a period of strong growth, the brand saw a 19% like-for-like sales decline in 2025. This reorganization is a key part of the strategy to revive performance at the house, which has seen its revenue dip since 2022. For the off-price sector, such manufacturing reorganizations are critical to watch. A focus on operational excellence and quality control can often lead to changes in inventory levels and product flows as the new systems are implemented. The off-price channel already accounts for approximately one-third of the global luxury goods market. As Kering streamlines its production, any resulting surplus or discontinued stock could create significant buying opportunities for off-price retailers.
