NFL Salary Cap Hits Record High

The NFL salary cap has reached a historic high of $301.2 million for the 2026 season — up $22 million from last year. This all-time high is poised to influence free agency and roster moves across the league, while the Cowboys placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens.

The NFL's spending limit for teams is soaring, fueled by a massive influx of media revenue. The league's latest multi-billion dollar deals with broadcasting partners are a primary driver behind the cap's rapid growth, leading to more money for player salaries. This year's $22 million jump to a $301.2 million cap continues a sharp upward trend since the 2021 season, which saw a rare decrease due to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on revenue. The cap has rebounded dramatically, increasing by an average of $24 million each year since then. The Dallas Cowboys are utilizing a non-exclusive franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens, which is projected to cost them $27.3 million for the 2026 season. This move prevents Pickens from becoming an unrestricted free agent while both sides work on a long-term contract. Pickens is coming off a career-best season in 2025, where he recorded 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection. These numbers highlight his importance to the Cowboys' offense and the motivation behind the franchise tag. The non-exclusive tag allows Pickens to negotiate with other teams. If he agrees to an offer from another club, the Cowboys have the right to match it. If they decline, they will receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. Teams have until July 15th to sign their franchise-tagged players to a multi-year extension. If a long-term deal isn't reached by then, the player must play the season on the one-year franchise tender.
