Accelerated education program

Millikin University launched an accelerated online Elementary Education program aimed at working professionals so students can earn credentials on a condensed, flexible schedule. (x.com) (x.com).

Millikin University is trying to turn “I can’t quit my job to go back to school” into “I can finish teacher training in two years.” Its new online Elementary Education track is built for working adults and transfer students, with teaching-methods classes delivered in 8-week asynchronous blocks instead of a traditional semester schedule. (millikin.edu) The program is not a generic education degree. Millikin says it is designed for people seeking either a bachelor’s degree or teacher licensure in Elementary Education, which in Illinois covers grades 1 through 6. (millikin.edu 1) (millikin.edu 2) The format is the selling point. “Asynchronous” means students do not have to log in at one fixed hour, so someone working a day shift in Decatur or elsewhere can do coursework at night or on weekends. (millikin.edu) (nowdecatur.com) Millikin is also promising that the online setup does not remove the classroom piece. The university says internship courses place students in grades 1 through 6 classrooms, so the program still includes supervised school experience rather than only online lectures. (millikin.edu) (nowdecatur.com) This sits inside Millikin’s College of Professional Studies and School of Education, which already markets degree-completion options with online, hybrid, evening, and weekend formats. The new elementary track fits that larger push to recruit adults who started college earlier or are changing careers midstream. (millikin.edu 1) (millikin.edu 2) The credential also plugs into Illinois’ licensing system. Millikin says its School of Education is an Illinois State Board of Education approved program provider, and the university lists Elementary Education Online among its licensure options alongside English as a Second Language and Special Education endorsements. (millikin.edu 1) (millikin.edu 2) Millikin is launching this from a position it has been highlighting for a year. In June 2024, the university said its Elementary Education program received an “Exemplary” rating from the Illinois State Board of Education, which gives the school a quality signal as it moves the same field into a faster online format. (millikin.edu) So the headline is not just “another online program.” It is a private university in Decatur packaging teacher preparation into short, flexible course blocks, keeping in-person internships, and aiming directly at paraprofessionals, transfer students, and other adults who want an Illinois elementary teaching credential without stepping out of the workforce for four full years.
