The game comes from developer Stoic, the studio widely known for its work on the award-winning tactical RPG series, *The Banner Saga*. While *Towerborne* shares a similar visual goal of looking like an animated feature film, its gameplay is a significant departure from Stoic's previous turn-based titles. *Towerborne* launched its full 1.0 version on February 26, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. This followed a period in Steam Early Access that began in September 2024 and a subsequent release on Xbox Game Preview. Initially, the game was planned as a free-to-play, live-service title. However, developer Stoic shifted to a premium "buy once" model, with a standard edition priced at $24.99, a move that also made core cosmetic items earnable through gameplay rather than microtransactions. The gameplay blends classic beat 'em up action with modern action-RPG mechanics.
