Iran-Israel Conflict Ignites, Khamenei Killed

The Mideast conflict has dramatically escalated after U.S.-Israeli strikes reportedly killed Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israeli warplanes struck Tehran for a second straight day, while Iran has begun its promised "massive retaliation," launching missile barrages at both Israel and several Gulf Arab states.

The joint U.S.-Israeli military action, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury," represents a significant escalation in the long-simmering conflict with Iran, moving beyond previous shadow wars and proxy conflicts. The operation's stated goals extend beyond targeting military infrastructure to include fostering regime change, with President Trump publicly encouraging the Iranian people to "take over your government." This recent confrontation follows a period of heightened tensions, including a 12-day war in June 2025 that saw Israel strike Iranian nuclear and military facilities, and Iran retaliate with large-scale missile attacks on Israeli cities. The current strikes are far more extensive, targeting not only military and nuclear sites but also the senior leadership of the Iranian regime in an attempt to destabilize the government. In response to the strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has initiated a massive retaliatory operation. This has included launching barrages of ballistic missiles at Israel and, for the first time, directly targeting several Gulf Arab states, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain, which host U.S. military bases. The death of Khamenei after over three decades in power creates a significant leadership vacuum. According to the Iranian constitution, a temporary council, including the president and the head of the judiciary, will manage affairs until the Assembly of Experts, a body of 88 clerics, elects a successor. This process is now fraught with uncertainty amidst a major regional war. Potential successors to Khamenei have long been debated, with his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, often mentioned as a contender, though this has raised concerns about a move towards hereditary rule. The selection of the next Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts will be a critical determinant of Iran's future direction, both domestically and in its foreign policy. The Gulf Arab states, while long wary of Iran's influence, have found themselves in a precarious position. Despite recent diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions with Tehran, they are now directly in the line of fire due to hosting U.S. military installations. Their response has been mixed, condemning the Iranian retaliation while also calling for restraint and de-escalation from all sides.
