UNC Stays Perfect at Home

North Carolina defeated Virginia Tech 81-74 to remain unbeaten at home this season at 15-0. RJ Davis scored 21 points and Armando Bacot added 18 points with 12 rebounds to power the Tar Heels' perfect Chapel Hill record.

The victory over Virginia Tech was part of a dominant season for the Tar Heels, who finished with an overall record of 29-8. They would go on to win the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title with a 17-3 conference record. This win was a crucial piece of a six-game winning streak UNC carried into the postseason. The team's strong performance throughout the season earned them a No. 1 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament. Their season ultimately ended in the Sweet Sixteen with a close 89-87 loss to Alabama. The 2023-24 season marked a significant turnaround from the previous year, when the Tar Heels, despite being the preseason No. 1, failed to make the NCAA Tournament. The team, under third-year head coach Hubert Davis, drew the highest average home attendance in all of college basketball for the season. Senior guard RJ Davis had a standout year, earning consensus first-team All-American honors and being named the ACC Player of the Year. In a game against Miami on February 26, Davis scored a career-high 42 points, the most ever scored in the Dean E. Smith Center. Center Armando Bacot's double-double in the Virginia Tech game was one of 19 he recorded that season. He concluded his collegiate career as UNC's all-time leader in rebounds (1,715) and double-doubles (87), and finished second in all-time scoring with 2,347 points. His 87 double-doubles are tied with Wake Forest's Tim Duncan for the most in ACC history.
