Assam pitched as medical hub

Assam is being promoted as a Southeast Asian medical hub with 12+ medical colleges and AIIMS Guwahati now online — authorities say that will reduce outbound patient flows to Chennai. The Asian Development Bank approved a USD 398.8 million loan for the “Assam State Tertiary Health Care Augmentation Project” to modernize tertiary hospitals and medical education in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told investors Assam aims to have more than 60 medical colleges by 2035, with a target of 30 government colleges becoming functional as part of a long‑term expansion plan. The “Health Horizons” session at the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit on February 25, 2025 featured Health Commissioner Sidharth Singh and Health Minister Ashok Singhal outlining public‑private partnerships and international tie‑ups to scale tertiary care. AIIMS Guwahati was formally inaugurated on April 14, 2023, and its campus reports functioning clinical departments with OPD volumes of around 150 patients per day. State education trackers and counselling sites list roughly 13 government MBBS colleges in Assam, collectively offering about 1,550–1,650 MBBS seats as medical‑education capacity has expanded in recent years. A 2023 survey and subsequent reporting found about 73% of people from northeast India with non‑communicable diseases travelled to other states for care, a statistic cited by Assam planners when pitching local capacity upgrades. Private investments tied to the state push include foundation stones for a Rs 800 crore healthcare‑hospitality cluster in Guwahati and proposals for multi‑hundred‑bed and 1,000‑bed hospitals by chains such as Medanta, aimed at anchoring regional referral care.
