Ripple lands Kyobo pilot

Ripple announced a partnership with Kyobo Life Insurance to pilot tokenized government bond settlement on‑chain using Ripple Custody for near‑real‑time institutional settlement. The news sits alongside reports that major corporates like American Airlines are exploring Ripple infrastructure for on‑chain payments, signaling multiple enterprise pilots using Ripple’s rails. Ripple said on April 15 it will run a pilot with Kyobo Life Insurance to settle tokenized South Korean government bonds on blockchain rails in near real time. (ripple.com) The pilot uses Ripple Custody, the company’s institutional storage and settlement platform, and Ripple said the project is its first partnership with a major South Korean insurance institution. Kyobo is one of Korea’s largest life insurers, according to Ripple’s announcement. (ripple.com) A tokenized bond is a regular bond represented as a digital token, like replacing a paper claim in a filing cabinet with a tracked entry on a shared ledger. Ripple and Kyobo said that setup can shrink settlement from the usual two business days to near-real-time completion. (cointelegraph.com) (ripple.com) South Korea has been building the legal plumbing for that market. The Financial Services Commission said in January that a joint consultative body on security tokens would include the Korea Securities Depository, the Financial Supervisory Service, industry groups and fintech firms, and that issuers would need to follow electronic registration rules. (fsc.go.kr) The National Assembly also passed amendments this year to create a formal framework for tokenized securities, giving banks, brokerages and fintech firms a clearer path to issue and distribute blockchain-based versions of regulated assets. (theblock.co) (en.sedaily.com) Ripple has been trying to sell more than cross-border payments. Its custody business says secure storage is the first step for institutions that want to offer tokenization, stablecoins, trading and other digital-asset services. (ripple.com) (businesswire.com) That push widened after Ripple agreed in April 2025 to buy prime broker Hidden Road for $1.25 billion. Ripple said Hidden Road would move post-trade activity onto the XRP Ledger and use Ripple’s stablecoin, RLUSD, for cross-margining between digital assets and traditional markets. (ripple.com) (hiddenroad.com) Reports this month said more than 1,100 corporate clients tied to Ripple Treasury are exploring on-chain payments, including American Airlines and Coca-Cola, though those reports rely on secondary accounts and neither company had publicly detailed a rollout in the materials reviewed here. (kucoin.com) (mexc.com) For now, the Kyobo project is still a pilot, not a production market. But it gives Ripple a named insurance customer in a country that spent the first months of 2026 writing rules for tokenized securities before firms started testing them. (ripple.com) (fsc.go.kr)
