LA Fine Dining Scene Rebounds

After major closures, Los Angeles is seeing a fine dining resurgence with new restaurants Seline and Somni leading the way with elaborate tasting menus and ambitious cuisine. The revival signals renewed excitement in the city's culinary circles.

The city's fine dining landscape suffered significant losses in 2025, with more than 100 notable restaurants closing. These closures weren't limited to small establishments; they included Michelin-starred restaurants like Gucci Osteria and Shibumi, as well as beloved institutions such as the century-old Original Pantry Cafe. Owners cited a combination of financial challenges, reduced foot traffic, and the lingering effects of the pandemic as reasons for shuttering. The revival is being led by chefs with formidable backgrounds. Seline's chef-owner, Dave Beran, is a James Beard Award winner who previously worked at Chicago's acclaimed Alinea and Next. Before opening Seline, he earned a Michelin star for his Santa Monica restaurant Dialogue, which closed during the pandemic. His new venture, named after his daughter, features a 15-18 course tasting menu that tells a story through Southern California ingredients. Somni, which means "dream" in Catalan, is the reopened vision of chef Aitor Zabala, who previously earned two Michelin stars before the restaurant's pandemic-era closure. Just seven months after reopening in West Hollywood in late 2024, Somni was awarded three Michelin stars, a first for a Los Angeles restaurant. Zabala, who has a background at the legendary El Bulli, offers a whimsical tasting menu of over 20 courses at an intimate 14-seat counter. This trend toward elaborate, high-end dining experiences is seen as a broader shift in consumer behavior. Rather than just a meal, these restaurants offer an immersive event, a form of "experiential outing" that is gaining popularity. The success of these ambitious tasting menus signals a renewed appetite for culinary artistry and a bright spot in a sector that has recently faced immense challenges.
