Rijksmuseum Confirms Lost Rembrandt

Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum confirmed that *Vision of Zacharias in the Temple* is an authentic Rembrandt from 1633, painted when the artist was 27. After two years of intensive analysis, the painting previously dismissed as a copy is being called a "needle in a haystack" discovery and is now on display. The authentication adds another masterpiece to Rembrandt's known works from his early Amsterdam period.

The painting was last seriously studied in 1960, at which time scholars excluded it from Rembrandt's official body of work. It was sold to a private collector a year later and remained out of public view for 65 years, making further academic study impossible until the current owner recently approached the Rijksmuseum. To re-authenticate the piece, researchers used the same advanced technologies as in "Operation Night Watch," their large-scale investigation of Rembrandt's most famous work. Techniques included macro X-ray fluorescence scanning to analyze the pigments and dendrochronology, which dated the oak panel to the correct period. Analysis confirmed the paint composition, including chalk, lead white, and copper-based pigments, matches other Rembrandt works from the early 1630s. The layering of paint and compositional changes discovered under the surface are also consistent with the master's technique during this period. The artwork depicts the biblical high priest Zacharias being informed by the Archangel Gabriel that he will have a son. Unconventionally for the time, Rembrandt chose not to depict the angel as a figure, instead representing his presence with a dramatic burst of light from the upper right corner. This work is considered a rare history painting from a period when Rembrandt was primarily focused on more lucrative portrait commissions after his recent move from Leiden to Amsterdam. The re-discovery offers new insight into the artistic development of the young painter.
