Adelaide Oval eyes IPL match

Adelaide Oval is being considered as a venue for an IPL 2026 match, signalling possible international expansion of match hosts and the logistical scope that comes with staging an IPL fixture overseas. (x.com)

Adelaide Oval is exploring a plan to host a regular-season Indian Premier League match in March 2027, which would be the tournament’s first game in Australia. (sen.com.au) The proposal is being driven by Adelaide Oval chairman Jamie Briggs and South Australian Cricket Association chief executive Will Rayner, according to SEN’s April 14 report. The Board of Control for Cricket in India had not yet been formally approached when that report was published. (sen.com.au) Indian outlets that matched the SEN report said the idea under discussion is a single IPL fixture in Adelaide as early as next March, with a Big Bash League game in Chennai discussed as part of the same exchange. NDTV said that proposal was still at the discussion stage on April 15. (sports.ndtv.com) The IPL has played outside India before, but only when the full tournament or part of it had to move. The 2009 season was held in South Africa because of India’s general election, and the league shifted to the United Arab Emirates in 2014 and again in 2020 because of scheduling and Covid-era disruption. (britannica.com, news18.com) That makes Adelaide different from those earlier relocations: this would be a regular-season match staged overseas by choice, not because the tournament had to leave India. Several reports also tie the pitch to the National Football League model of taking domestic games abroad to build new markets. (firstpost.com, tribuneindia.com) Adelaide Oval has the scale for it. Cricket Australia lists the ground’s capacity at 53,500, and the venue is already used for international cricket and Big Bash League matches. (cricket.com.au, afl.com.au) The calendar is part of the challenge. The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s official 2025 schedule had the IPL running from March 22 to May 25 across 74 matches, and any overseas fixture would have to fit that window, team travel, broadcast timings and venue preparation. (iplt20.com) South Australian officials see the upside in tourism and event revenue. Reports on the proposal said the state’s pitch draws on Adelaide’s recent use of major events, including LIV Golf and the Australian Football League’s Gather Round, to bring visitors into the city. (rediff.com, australiannews.net) For now, the story is still at the proposal stage. Until the Board of Control for Cricket in India receives a formal approach and signs off, Adelaide’s IPL match remains an ambitious plan rather than a confirmed 2027 fixture.
