Blue Jackets Win in OT Thriller
The Columbus Blue Jackets edged out the New York Rangers 5-4 in overtime, with Kirill Marchenko scoring his second goal of the game in OT to secure the win. The Blue Jackets weathered a furious comeback attempt by the Rangers, who tied the game late before Columbus clinched it in extra time.
The victory for Columbus snapped a two-game losing streak and marked the team's first win under new coach Rick Bowness. Since Bowness took over on January 12, the Blue Jackets have seen a significant turnaround, improving their record to 11-2-1. Columbus established a dominant 4-0 lead through the first two periods of the game. Goals came from Adam Fantilli, a power-play goal from Kirill Marchenko, a short-handed goal by Sean Monahan, and a tally from Mathiew Olivier. Fantilli, a rookie, found the net for the third consecutive game. The New York Rangers mounted a furious rally in the third period, scoring four unanswered goals to force overtime. The comeback began just 30 seconds into the period with a goal from Vladislav Gavrikov, followed 24 seconds later by a goal from rookie Gabe Perreault. Perreault, a rookie, scored his second goal of the period with just 4:46 remaining in regulation to tie the game and send it to overtime. Despite the late-game heroics, the loss continued a difficult stretch for the Rangers, who have a record of 3-11-3 in their last 17 games. Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins made 27 saves for the Blue Jackets to secure the win. On the other end of the ice, Igor Shesterkin stopped 23 shots for the Rangers.
