Oldham County Extension is asking residents to start logging miles for “Walking KY,” a team challenge built around covering Kentucky’s length on foot, with a kickoff set for Friday, April 24. (ukyoldham.pacecommunity.net) The Oldham County registration page says participants will try to walk 417 miles in two months, either on teams or solo, and that “all physical activity types count as steps.” It also says the kickoff at the Extension office in La Grange will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and include line dancing with Whitney and senior fitness with Karen Wyatt. (ukyoldham.pacecommunity.net) Oldham County Chamber of Commerce listings and Oldham County Tourism listings describe the same program as a countywide walking effort with weekly “Walking Wednesdays” at local parks. The tourism listing says the challenge is designed around walking 417 miles “across Kentucky” in two months. (members.oldhamcountychamber.com, touroldham.com) The event is being run through the Oldham County Extension office, part of the University of Kentucky and Kentucky State University extension network. The office is at 207 Parker Drive in La Grange and lists Family and Consumer Sciences among its local program areas. (oldham.mgcafe.uky.edu) Walking programs like this line up with federal health guidance that says adults should get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity and two days a week of muscle-strengthening activity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says brisk walking counts toward that weekly goal, and that some physical activity is better than none. (cdc.gov, cdc.gov) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also says regular physical activity can lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, several cancers, anxiety, and depression. Its walking guidance calls walking an activity for “all ages and abilities” and ties it to safer, more walkable communities. (cdc.gov, hhs.gov) Kentucky health data helps explain why county extension offices keep returning to basic movement campaigns. The Trust for America’s Health Kentucky one-pager shows the state’s adult obesity rate at 37.7% in 2022, after topping 40% in 2021, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says updated state obesity maps remain a core measure for tracking risk. (tfah.org, cdc.gov) Oldham County has run versions of the challenge before. An archived Oldham County Extension newsletter said its third annual “Walking KY” effort drew 130 people, who collectively logged more than 18,163 miles and crossed the state nearly 43 times. (oldham.mgcafe.uky.edu) This year’s sign-up page says participants can buy a $12 T-shirt and that payments received after April 8 will be filled in a second order arriving in May. The walking itself starts with the April 24 kickoff and then moves into weekly park meetups built around one simple measure: miles logged over two months.
