Pakistan T20 Team Fined After World Cup Exit

Pakistan's T20 cricket team has been fined following their disappointing World Cup showing. The penalty comes after their elimination, with such fines being rare since most governing bodies view missing out on a title as punishment enough, highlighting the board's dissatisfaction.

Each player on the Pakistan squad has been fined PKR 5 million, which is approximately $18,000 USD, by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This decision was reportedly spearheaded by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who expressed his displeasure after the team's high-pressure loss to rival India during the group stage. The penalty comes after Pakistan was eliminated in the Super 8 stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Despite a victory over Sri Lanka in their final match, it wasn't enough to surpass New Zealand's net run rate, marking the fourth consecutive ICC event where Pakistan has failed to reach the semi-finals. Key setbacks in the tournament included a 61-run defeat to India, a loss to England, and a washed-out match against New Zealand. This exit follows a pattern of underwhelming performances in major tournaments, including a group stage exit in the 2024 T20 World Cup after a shocking loss to the USA. That earlier defeat to the tournament co-hosts was described as a "black day" for Pakistan cricket and highlighted tactical issues within the team. The team's leadership is now under intense scrutiny. Captain Salman Ali Agha's position is reportedly under review, and he has stated any decision on his future will be made after returning home and not based on emotion. Head Coach Mike Hesson is also in the firing line following experiments that were seen as detrimental to the team's performance. Looking ahead, the PCB has indicated that "enough pampering has been done" and future financial incentives will be strictly tied to on-field results. A significant overhaul of the team is expected, with the careers of several senior players, including former captain Babar Azam, potentially under review as the board looks to introduce younger talent. The team is scheduled to tour Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series starting on March 11. Following that, they are expected to host Zimbabwe and then Australia for ODI and T20I series later in 2026.
