Apple expands Mac mini production in Houston

Apple is expanding its Mac mini production with a new factory in Houston, Texas. The move is part of a broader push toward onshoring manufacturing amid global supply chain shifts and is relevant for hardware-software integration across the macOS and iOS ecosystems.

- The Houston facility, operated in partnership with Foxconn, will be the first in the U.S. to produce the Mac mini. - This expansion will double Apple's manufacturing footprint in Houston to 500,000 square feet, converting a warehouse into a 220,000-square-foot production space for the Mac mini. - The same Houston campus already assembles advanced AI servers, including the logic boards, which are utilized in Apple's data centers across the United States. - Apple is also establishing a 20,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Center in Houston to provide training in advanced manufacturing techniques to students and supplier employees. - This move is part of a larger $600 billion commitment by Apple to invest in its U.S. supply chain and expand domestic manufacturing. - The onshoring of Mac mini production is seen as a strategic step to de-risk the supply chain from geopolitical uncertainties and potential tariffs on goods imported from Asia. - While the Houston facility will serve domestic demand for the Mac mini, production will also continue in Asia to meet local demand there. - This is not Apple's first foray into U.S.-based Mac manufacturing; the Mac Pro has been assembled in Austin, Texas, since 2013, though on a smaller scale.
