Bay Area Weekend Food Events Spotlighted
Two key food events are happening in the Bay Area this weekend. San Francisco's Ferry Plaza is hosting its Brassica Bash today, Feb 28, with citrus tastings and cooking demos. Meanwhile, the Vallejo Farmers' Market is also open today, offering fresh produce and specialty items like tamales and baked goods.
The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is operated by the nonprofit Foodwise, which has been connecting Bay Area communities with local farmers since 1993. Today's "Brassica Bash" is part of their free Seasonal Spotlight series, which offers tastings and recipes to highlight peak-season produce. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a special cooking demonstration at 11 a.m. by chef Alisha Wilson of Lil' Alijo Catering & Events. Expect to find a wide variety of brassicas—like kale, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts—from local farms such as Dirty Girl Produce, Eatwell Farm, and Star Route Farms. For convenience, the market offers a free "Veggie Valet" service, allowing you to check your purchases and pick them up curbside. The Vallejo Farmers' Market, open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday, is managed by the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association and has been a community staple since 1999. It is known for its "chill vibe" with live music and more budget-friendly prices compared to other Bay Area markets. Beyond seasonal produce, look for specialty vendors offering items like fresh tortillas and tamales, vegan options, local honey from Goldrush Bay Area Honey, and even fresh oysters from Bodega Bay Oyster Company. The market is a year-round hub located at Georgia and Marin Streets, supporting local agriculture and making fresh food accessible by accepting EBT and WIC.
