Solana Mobile Stack Opens to Hardware Makers

The Solana Mobile Stack (SMS) is being rolled out to Android OEMs, offering a turnkey solution for hardware manufacturers to integrate Solana's web3 capabilities. This development could accelerate the proliferation of "app coins" and agent-native wallets by embedding them directly into new devices.

This move follows the rollercoaster trajectory of Solana's own hardware. The first phone, Saga, launched at $1,000 and saw sluggish sales, with the price later dropping to $599. By early December 2023, only around 2,500 units had been sold, far below the 25,000-50,000 target. The Saga's fate dramatically reversed due to a 30 million BONK token airdrop for device owners. As BONK's value skyrocketed, the airdrop's worth surpassed the phone's price, creating a viral arbitrage opportunity that led to a complete sell-out and a secondary market where phones fetched over five times their retail price. This "airdrop-to-buy" model heavily influenced the strategy for Solana's second device, the "Seeker" (also referred to as Chapter 2), which secured over 150,000 pre-orders. The success of Saga and Seeker, which together shipped over 200,000 units and generated over $5 billion in on-chain transaction volume, validated the mobile stack for this wider OEM rollout. The core of the Solana Mobile Stack (SMS) includes a Seed Vault for hardware-secured key storage, the Seeker Wallet for transactions, and a dedicated, fee-free dApp Store for crypto-native applications. This is designed to give Android manufacturers a way to differentiate their products and tap into recurring revenue through transaction-based revenue sharing. The stack is modular and doesn't interfere with Google Play services or security certifications, making it easier for OEMs to adopt. It supports both Qualcomm and MediaTek chipsets, with MediaTek powering nearly half of all Android devices, signaling a massive potential distribution channel. Crypto Twitter personalities have framed the move as a potential catalyst for mass adoption, with the native integration of web3 primitives seen as a way to make crypto more accessible. The SKR token is also intended to align the economic interests of manufacturers, developers, and users in the ecosystem's growth. For hardware makers, the pitch is a connection to Solana's $1.5 trillion annual economy and a way to offer unique features in markets with varying demands. The focus can be on stablecoins and yield in places like Latin America and India, or on secure self-custody in developed Asian markets. The announcement and demonstrations are taking place at MWC 2026 in Barcelona, where Solana Mobile is actively meeting with potential OEM partners. This initiative represents a strategic pivot from creating bespoke hardware to embedding Solana's infrastructure across the broader Android ecosystem.
