Apple Kicks Off Major Product Launch Event
Apple's highly anticipated multi-day product launch event begins today, with simultaneous announcements planned for New York, London, and Shanghai. CEO Tim Cook teased a "big week ahead," with reports expecting the unveiling of the iPhone 17e, new iPads, and multiple MacBooks.
This week's announcements depart from Apple's traditional single-keynote format, opting for a multi-day rollout of press releases. This staggered approach, culminating in hands-on "Special Apple Experience" sessions for media in three international cities, aims to maximize coverage and sustain consumer interest over a longer period. The events are kicking off simultaneously at 9 a.m. Eastern Time in New York, 2 p.m. GMT in London, and 10 p.m. CST in Shanghai. The iPhone 17e is set for a significant update, incorporating the Dynamic Island and a new lavender color. It will also feature the A19 chip and Apple's own C1X cellular modem, which promises to improve 5G efficiency. In a strategic move, the base storage for the iPhone 17e has been doubled to 256GB while maintaining its $599 price point. The new iPad Air will see a notable performance boost with the introduction of the M4 chip, making it up to 30% faster than the previous M3 model. The base model now includes 12GB of unified memory, a 50% increase, to better support the new AI features in iPadOS 26. Connectivity is also being upgraded with Wi-Fi 7 and faster 5G capabilities thanks to the new N1 and C1X chips. The MacBook lineup is also slated for a refresh, with the MacBook Air receiving the M5 chip, and the high-end MacBook Pros being updated with the M5 Pro and Max chips. A new low-cost MacBook is also anticipated, with a starting price projected to be between $699 and $799, and is expected to come in a variety of colors. This more affordable option is aimed at students and to attract switchers from Windows and Chromebooks. This series of launches is seen by some analysts as a precursor to a larger push into artificial intelligence. While major updates to Siri are not expected at this event, the hardware upgrades are laying the groundwork for more significant AI-driven features in the future. J.P. Morgan analysts predict that Apple's focus on AI companion devices could become a $25 billion revenue opportunity by 2030.
