WuXi XDC and Earendil Labs Form Strategic Collaboration

Bioconjugates firm WuXi XDC has entered a strategic collaboration with Earendil Labs. The partnership will focus on advancing WuXi XDC's WuXiTecan-2 payload-linker technology platform for developing antibody-drug conjugates.

This deal, potentially worth up to $885 million, gives Earendil Labs exclusive global rights to WuXi XDC's proprietary WuXiTecan-2 payload-linker technology for multiple specific targets. In return for the license, WuXi XDC will receive an upfront payment, along with development, regulatory, and sales milestone payments, and is also eligible for tiered royalties on future net sales. The collaboration pairs Earendil's artificial intelligence and high-throughput biology platforms for discovering novel antibodies with WuXi XDC's established manufacturing and development capabilities. Earendil, a U.S.-based startup, specializes in using machine learning for the research and production of innovative drugs for conditions like cancer and autoimmune diseases. WuXi XDC, a Hong Kong-listed firm spun off from WuXi Biologics, is a contract research, development, and manufacturing organization (CRDMO) focused on bioconjugates. Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are a form of targeted cancer therapy often called "smart bombs." They are composed of three parts: a monoclonal antibody that seeks out specific proteins on cancer cells, a potent cytotoxic (cell-killing) payload, and a chemical linker that connects them. This design allows for the direct delivery of chemotherapy to tumor cells, minimizing damage to healthy tissues. The linker and payload are critical for an ADC's success. The linker must be stable enough to hold the toxic drug until it reaches the target, and then release the payload inside the cancer cell. WuXi XDC's WuXiTecan-2 is one such payload-linker technology, designed to be hydrophilic and stable to accelerate the discovery of next-generation ADCs. Under the agreement, WuXi XDC will handle the chemical, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) development of the ADC components. Earendil Labs will then take the lead on subsequent product development, global regulatory submissions, and eventual commercialization of any cancer treatments developed through the partnership. This partnership is part of a larger trend of major pharmaceutical companies investing in AI-driven biotechnology. Earendil has previously entered into multi-billion dollar agreements with Sanofi to develop bispecific antibodies for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, showcasing the industry's confidence in its AI platform.
