AMD Gains Desktop CPU Market Share, But Intel Maintains Lead

AMD's desktop CPU market share climbed by nearly 10% year-over-year, indicating strong momentum for its Ryzen processors. Despite these gains, Intel continues to lead in every market sector. This includes the embedded and industrial segments, where Intel's legacy compatibility and established supply chain relationships remain significant advantages.

- In the server market, AMD's EPYC processors have driven the company's server revenue share to a record 41.3%, with a unit share of 28.8% in late 2025. This success is largely due to adoption by hyperscale data centers and high-performance computing clients. - A key trend is AMD's higher average selling price (ASP) in certain segments; its desktop CPU revenue share reached 42.6% with only a 36.4% unit share, indicating strong sales of its more expensive high-margin processors. - While the desktop market sees gains, the laptop segment remains a stronghold for Intel, which captures roughly 75% of the revenue and unit share. However, AMD is gaining ground with its Ryzen 7040 series processors, which are the company's first to include a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for AI PCs. - The competition is fierce between specific product lines, with AMD's Ryzen 7000 series, based on the "Zen 4" architecture, directly competing with Intel's 13th and 14th Generation "Raptor Lake" Core processors. For its part, Intel is planning an aggressive server roadmap with upcoming chips like "Sierra Forest," which will feature up to 288 E-Cores. - For the full year 2023, AMD achieved a record high overall x86 CPU market share of 31.1% (including PC, server, and embedded processors) against Intel's 68.9%. - Intel remains the leader in the global embedded systems market, a sector forecast to reach over $160 billion by 2030. This market is fueled by the growth of IoT, industrial automation, automotive systems, and smart devices.
