Six children’s publishers from Senegal, Japan, Argentina, France, Canada, and New Zealand won the 2026 Bologna Prize on April 13 in Bologna. (bolognachildrensbookfair.com) The winners were Saaraba Éditions for Africa, Bronze Publishing for Asia, Lecturita Ediciones for Caribbean, Central and South America, Éditions La Doux for Europe, Tundra Books for North America, and Messy Press for Oceania. (bolognachildrensbookfair.com) The awards were announced during the Bologna Children’s Book Fair’s official April 13 ceremony at Palazzo Re Enzo, and the prize is presented by the fair with the Italian Publishers Association and the International Publishers Association. (publishingperspectives.com) The Bologna Prize has run since 2013 and names one publisher from each of six world regions each year. The fair says the award is meant to recognize publishers for creativity, innovation, and editorial quality. (publishingperspectives.com) What sets this prize apart is who does the voting. Bologna Children’s Book Fair says publishers, publishers’ associations, and reading-promotion institutions first recommend candidates, and then fair exhibitors vote on the finalists from February 10 to March 16. (bolognachildrensbookfair.com) This year’s shortlist put five publishers in each region, including Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing and Tra Publishing in North America, Pratham Books and Tulika Publishers in Asia, and Gerstenberg Verlag and Iperborea in Europe. (bolognachildrensbookfair.com) Several winners are relatively young companies. Publishing Perspectives reported that Saaraba was founded in Dakar in 2022, while Messy Press was founded in Auckland in 2025; Bronze Publishing, by contrast, was founded in Tokyo in 1983. Quill & Quire reported that Canadian publishers have now won the region 10 times since the prize began, with Tundra Books joining Greystone Kids, La courte échelle, and Monsieur Ed among recent winners. (quillandquire.com) The awards landed in the opening days of the 2026 Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which runs from April 13 to April 16 and remains one of the industry’s main marketplaces for children’s rights, illustration, and licensing.
