AI Agent to Automate Ocean Freight
Logistics tech firm project44 has launched an “AI Ocean Exceptions Agent” to autonomously resolve shipping disruptions. The tool is designed to detect and manage issues like delayed or “rolled” containers, aiming to reduce costly supply chain delays.
The new AI agent from project44 aims to tackle the pervasive issue of "rolled" cargo—containers left behind from their scheduled vessel. At the peak of recent supply chain disruptions, more than a third of all containers at major transshipment ports were being rolled, with some carriers like CMA CGM and ONE seeing rollover rates of over 50% for their shipments. These rollovers are more than just an inconvenience; they carry significant financial penalties. A single container delayed for two weeks can accrue over $2,000 in demurrage and detention fees alone, not counting the broader costs of production stoppages and missed sales opportunities. During the height of the pandemic, shipping lines collected an estimated $6.9 billion in these fees. Project44's tool is designed to provide shippers with an early warning, claiming it can detect the risk of a container being rolled up to 35 hours before the carrier provides an official status update. This allows logistics teams to rebook a shipment on an alternative vessel in under five minutes, a process that can manually take hours of work. The move is part of a larger arms race in the supply chain visibility sector, where project44 competes with other major players like FourKites, GoComet, Descartes, and Shippeo. These firms are all leveraging AI and machine learning to move beyond simple location tracking to predictive and automated exception management. This push towards automation reflects a broader industry trend. According to Gartner, 75% of large enterprises are expected to have adopted AI in their supply chain operations by 2026. The goal is to create more resilient and self-optimizing supply chains that can autonomously resolve disruptions in real time.
