Pokémon Japan Championships 2026 registration opened for June 6-7 event — 13,815 likes and 1M+ views. Plus the first Pokémon Champions online competition "Global Challenge 2026 I" runs May 1-4 with new Regulation M-A ruleset.
The upcoming Japan Championships are not just another tournament; they are the primary path for Japanese players to qualify for the prestigious Pokémon World Championships. The top 64 competitors at this June event in Yokohama will secure an invitation to the global stage, with the top four receiving travel awards. This high-stakes environment consistently produces some of the world's most formidable trainers. This year's competition marks a significant shift, as it will be the first Japan Championships played on the new title, *Pokémon Champions*. This moves the competitive scene away from *Pokémon Scarlet and Violet*, which have been the standard for the past few seasons, introducing a fresh landscape for competitors to master. The "Global Challenge 2026 I" serves as a crucial online gateway to the main event in Yokohama. It's the very first online competition for *Pokémon Champions* and offers top players in Japan a chance to qualify for the national championship. For international players, this online tournament provides an early look at the evolving metagame and a chance to earn valuable Championship Points. A new ruleset, "Regulation M-A," will debut with these competitions. While full details remain under wraps until *Pokémon Champions* releases in April 2026, it has been confirmed to feature the return of Mega Evolutions and will utilize the Double Battle format standard in competitive Pokémon (VGC). Japan has a storied history in the Pokémon VGC, producing multiple World Champions, including Shoma "SHADEviera" Honami (2015), Naoto "penguin" Mizobuchi (2019), and the very first Pokémon World Champion, Kazuyuki Tsuji (2009). The national championship is a crucible where future world champions often prove their mettle. Yokohama, the host city, has recently become a significant location for the Pokémon world. In 2023, it hosted the first-ever Pokémon World Championships held in Japan, transforming the entire Minato Mirai area into a massive celebration of the franchise with events, parades, and decorations.
