Cipla Launches Generic Weight-Loss Drug

Cipla USA has launched Liraglutide Injection, a generic version of the weight management drug Saxenda®, in the United States. The launch follows ANDA approval from the USFDA for Cipla's partner, Orbicular. The move strengthens the company's portfolio of affordable generic medications.

The active ingredient in this new generic drug, liraglutide, was first developed by Novo Nordisk and approved by the FDA in 2010 to treat Type 2 diabetes under the brand name Victoza. Liraglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which works by mimicking a naturally occurring intestinal hormone to stimulate insulin secretion, delay stomach emptying, and regulate appetite. Recognizing its weight-loss side effect, Novo Nordisk sought and received FDA approval in December 2014 to market a higher dose of liraglutide specifically for chronic weight management, which became the brand-name drug Saxenda. The approval was for adults with a BMI of 30 or greater, or a BMI of 27 or greater with at least one weight-related condition. The introduction of a generic version is significant due to the high cost of the brand-name drug. Without insurance, a 30-day supply of Saxenda can have a list price of over $1,300. This high price point has made access difficult for many patients. Cipla is not the first company to launch a generic version of Saxenda. In August 2025, the FDA approved the first generic liraglutide injection for weight management from Teva Pharmaceuticals. The increasing availability of generics is expected to improve affordability and access for patients. These GLP-1 medications have become a fast-growing class of therapeutics globally. The demand for effective weight-management drugs has led to shortages of popular options like Saxenda and Wegovy, another GLP-1 drug from Novo Nordisk. The approval of generic liraglutide for weight management is part of a broader trend. The FDA has been encouraging the development of complex generic drugs to increase competition and lower prices. Other companies, such as Sun Pharma and Biocon, have also received approvals for generic liraglutide in other countries like Australia and the UK.
