DoorDash Deploys Delivery Robots in Fremont

DoorDash has officially launched its fleet of delivery robots in Fremont. The move aims to provide an automated, efficient delivery option for local restaurants and residents in the area.

The in-house developed "Dot" delivery robot is a key component of a much larger logistics system DoorDash is building. This system, known as the Autonomous Delivery Platform (ADP), acts as an AI-powered dispatcher, deciding the most efficient delivery method for each order by weighing factors like speed, cost, and distance. The platform will choose between a human Dasher, a Dot robot, or even a drone to optimize the delivery network in real-time. The Dot robot itself is equipped with a sophisticated sensor suite, including eight external cameras for 360-degree vision, three high-resolution lidar sensors, and four radar units, enabling it to navigate complex urban environments. This hardware allows the robot to travel at speeds up to 20 mph in bike lanes and on streets, and at a walking pace on sidewalks. The initial Fremont deployment will start with three robots before scaling up to a fleet of 30. This rollout represents DoorDash's long-term strategy to own more of the robotics stack after previous partnerships with companies like Starship Technologies. Unlike many competitors, Dot was developed entirely by DoorDash Labs and is designed to integrate deeply with the company's existing merchant tools and routing engine. For comparison, Starship Technologies, a pioneer in the field founded by Skype co-founders, operates a fleet of over 2,700 robots that have completed more than 9 million deliveries globally. Their six-wheeled robots operate at Level 4 autonomy, navigating sidewalks at pedestrian speeds and are equipped with 12 cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar. Starship's robots have a carrying capacity of up to 20 pounds, while the larger DoorDash Dot can handle up to 30 pounds.
