The "Convergence Era" of Business

A new analysis of 2026 business trends highlights the rise of a "convergence era" where the boundaries between tech, media, finance, and manufacturing are dissolving. Key drivers include the integration of AI into decision-making, the "platformification" of business models, and the blending of physical and digital customer experiences. According to the report, success now depends on building partner ecosystems rather than standalone products.

The concept of industry convergence is not new; deregulation in financial services, for instance, has long allowed banks to compete with insurance companies. However, digitalization has accelerated this trend from a linear to an exponential pace, creating new markets and business models where previously distinct sectors overlap. Global spending on Artificial Intelligence is forecast to surpass $2.5 trillion in 2026, as AI transitions from an experimental tool to a core business co-pilot. While two-thirds of organizations report AI-driven gains in efficiency, only about 34% are using it for deep transformation of their business models, often due to a lack of high-quality data. Platform-based companies now represent six of the ten most valuable corporations in the world. This model, which facilitates direct interaction between producers and consumers, bypasses traditional intermediaries, with the total market value of platform economics projected to hit $60 trillion, or nearly a third of global commerce, by 2025. The line between online and offline commerce continues to blur into a "phygital" experience. By 2026, nearly 75% of shoppers are expected to move between digital and physical channels during their purchase journey. Retailers are responding by turning stores into experiential destinations with AR displays, classes, and cafes to provide value that cannot be replicated online. Success is increasingly defined by collaboration within larger networks. Companies that are part of strong partner ecosystems grow five times faster than those that are not. According to one prediction from McKinsey, by 2025 almost a third of all global sales will originate from ecosystems composed of cross-industry players.
