Explosion Investigated Near US Embassy in Oslo

Norwegian police are investigating a potential explosion that occurred outside the U.S. Embassy in Oslo. No injuries were reported, but officials are looking into possible motives and connections to broader security concerns.

The blast occurred at approximately 1 a.m. local time on Sunday, causing minor material damage to the entrance of the embassy's consular section. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang that shook nearby houses and seeing smoke rising from the area. Norwegian police, including the bomb squad and forensic teams, responded swiftly, deploying a canine unit, a drone, and a helicopter to the scene. While they have increased security around the embassy, the national threat level for Norway remains unchanged. Investigators are treating the incident with "utmost seriousness" and are exploring multiple hypotheses, including the possibility of a targeted attack. Frode Larsen, head of the Oslo police investigation unit, stated it's "natural to see this in the context of the current security situation." This incident follows other recent security concerns for U.S. diplomatic missions in the region. In neighboring Sweden, the U.S. Embassy issued a security alert in June 2025 regarding potential attacks by Iran-backed criminal gangs. The Oslo embassy has faced direct threats in the past, including a temporary closure in May 2003 after an audiotape attributed to al-Qaida's second-in-command called for attacks on U.S. and other Western embassies. More recently, the embassy was the subject of an espionage case. In July 2025, a former security guard was indicted for allegedly leaking sensitive information, including floor plans and staff details, to both Russian and Iranian intelligence services.
