Atrium Therapeutics Launches with $270M

Biotech firm Atrium Therapeutics has officially launched with approximately $270 million in funding. The company will focus on developing novel RNA-based medicines to target rare genetic cardiomyopathies, marking a significant investment in the growing field of genetic therapies.

Atrium Therapeutics is a spin-off from Avidity Biosciences, established after Avidity's acquisition by Novartis. The new company will carry forward the cardiovascular disease research that was not part of Novartis's $12 billion buyout of Avidity. Atrium launches with full ownership of this precision cardiology pipeline. The leadership team brings direct experience with the core technology, as President and CEO Kathleen Gallagher was formerly the Chief Program Officer at Avidity. Sarah Boyce, the former CEO of Avidity, now serves as the Chair of Atrium's board of directors. The company begins with just under 50 former Avidity employees. Atrium's work centers on using small interfering RNA (siRNA) to address the genetic drivers of cardiac diseases. This approach builds on Avidity's platform for targeted, non-viral delivery of RNA therapies, applying learnings from skeletal muscle delivery to the heart. The company's initial pipeline is entirely preclinical but includes two named candidates. ATR 1072 targets PRKAG2 syndrome, with plans to file for an Investigational New Drug (IND) in the second half of 2026. ATR 1086 is aimed at PLN cardiomyopathy, with a target IND submission in 2027. Both are rare, progressive cardiomyopathies with no approved therapies that treat the underlying genetic cause. While the broader Boston/Cambridge area is a major biotech hub, Atrium Therapeutics is headquartered in San Diego, CA. The new public company began trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol RNA. Initial pre-market trading saw a dip, which is not uncommon as shareholders of the parent company may sell off shares of the newly independent, preclinical-stage entity.
