Messi Penalty Through the Wall
Inter Miami staged a 4-2 comeback victory over Orlando City in MLS Week 2, highlighted by Messi scoring a penalty kick that went directly through the defensive wall. LA Galaxy also impressed with a 3-0 win over Charlotte, while NYCFC beat Philadelphia Union 2-1.
The comeback for Inter Miami was sparked by a halftime substitution from Head Coach Javier Mascherano, who brought on attacker Mateo Silvetti. Silvetti scored within four minutes of the restart with a powerful long-range shot to cut Orlando's lead in half. Lionel Messi's first goal, which leveled the match at 2-2, came in the 57th minute. He found space at the edge of the penalty area and fired a left-footed strike into the corner. Telasco Segovia then gave Miami the lead in the 85th minute before Messi sealed the victory. The match-clinching goal was a 90th-minute free-kick from Messi, not a penalty. The strike from roughly 30 yards out went around the defensive wall and bounced beneath the goalkeeper. This goal was Messi's 70th career free-kick goal, tying him with Pelé for the second-most in history. The game also featured a heated exchange between Messi and Orlando City's coaching staff. After Orlando went up 2-0, words were reportedly exchanged between Messi and an assistant coach. Following his late free-kick, Messi celebrated in front of the Orlando supporters and then made a gesture toward the Orlando bench, appearing to ask Head Coach Oscar Pareja if he wanted an autograph. Elsewhere in MLS Week 2, the LA Galaxy established their dominance early against Charlotte FC. The Galaxy scored three times within the first 13 minutes, setting a club record for the fastest three-goal start to a match. João Klauss scored two of the goals, with Lucas Sanabria netting the opener in the 8th minute. New York City FC's win came in dramatic fashion with a 99th-minute winner from Tayvon Gray. The Philadelphia Union had equalized in the 89th minute via a penalty from Indiana Vassilev, but were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Olwethu Makhanya received a second yellow card.
