Vegetarians Cut Cancer Risk 30%

A new analysis reveals that vegetarians may lower their risk for five types of cancer by as much as 30% compared to meat-eaters. A parallel study confirms that vegetarians have lower overall cancer risk than those who consume meat, reinforcing the health benefits of plant-based diets for long-term disease prevention.

The landmark analysis, led by researchers at the University of Oxford's Cancer Epidemiology Unit, pooled data from over 1.8 million people. It found that compared to meat-eaters, vegetarians had a 21% lower risk of pancreatic cancer, a 12% lower risk of prostate cancer, and a 9% lower risk of breast cancer. The study, published in the *British Journal of Cancer*, also revealed a 28% lower risk of kidney cancer and a 31% lower risk of multiple myeloma among vegetarians. The research was the largest of its kind and funded by the World Cancer Research Fund. Interestingly, the findings were not uniform across all cancers. Vegetarians showed nearly double the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Researchers theorize this could be linked to lower intakes of certain nutrients more abundant in animal products. Similarly, the study found that vegans had a statistically significant higher risk of colorectal (bowel) cancer compared to meat-eaters. Experts suggest this could be related to lower calcium intake and that more research is needed, especially as modern plant-based diets often include ultra-processed foods. Plant-based diets are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and phytochemicals, which are known to help reduce inflammation and protect cells from DNA damage. These components are thought to contribute to a lower overall cancer risk by supporting a healthy body weight and gut function. While this large observational study provides strong correlations, it does not prove direct cause and effect. People who choose vegetarian diets may have other healthy lifestyle habits, like lower rates of smoking and alcohol consumption, that also influence their cancer risk.
