UK Greenlights US Use of Bases for Iran Strikes

The United Kingdom has authorized the United States to use its military bases for operations against Iran. The decision provides U.S. forces with greater operational flexibility and signals strong Western alliance cohesion, but it also risks drawing the UK more directly into the conflict.

The decision reverses the UK's initial refusal, a stance that reportedly disappointed US President Donald Trump who said the approval "took far too much time". Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated the change was due to Iran's "scorched earth strategy" and "reckless" missile attacks across the region that endangered British lives. The authorization specifically allows the US to use the bases for the "limited defensive purpose" of targeting Iranian missile launch sites and storage depots. The UK government has emphasized it will not participate in offensive strikes, framing the decision as an act of "collective self-defence" for regional allies. Potential bases for these operations include RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, a European airfield for US heavy bombers, and the strategic joint UK-US military base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. The UK has also been conducting its own defensive operations, intercepting Iranian drones targeting locations in Iraq and Qatar. Hours after the UK's announcement, RAF Akrotiri, a British airbase in Cyprus, was struck by a suspected Iranian drone, causing minor damage but no casualties. The UK government stated there are at least 200,000 British citizens in the Gulf region, and that Iranian attacks have targeted airports and hotels where they are staying. The move has generated political debate within the UK, with the Liberal Democrats demanding Parliament be given a vote on the decision. Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has stated it is "simply not true" that the UK is being dragged into a conflict, while also confirming that plans are being considered for the potential evacuation of roughly 300,000 Britons from the Middle East.
