Google expands Gemini use cases

Google has expanded Gemini’s free full-length practice tests to India’s NEET UG medical entrance exam and is reportedly preparing a Gemini-powered ‘Your Day’ proactive feed. Coverage describes the NEET rollout as built on vetted content, and separate reporting suggests Google is experimenting with ambient, anticipatory assistant surfaces while guides explain how users can opt out of Gemini features. Google is widening Gemini’s job description, adding free full-length practice tests for India’s National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate medical exam while also preparing a more proactive “Your Day” feed, according to Google and separate reporting. (workspaceupdates.googleblog.com) (9to5google.com) Google said on April 13 that users can now tell Gemini “I want to take a NEET mock exam” to start a full-length practice test. The company said the feature is available in English and works for personal Google accounts, Google Workspace customers, and Google Workspace Individual subscribers. (workspaceupdates.googleblog.com) (indiatoday.in) Google said the NEET material is grounded in “rigorously vetted content” from Indian education companies Physics Wallah and Careers360. Indian press reports said the rollout extends a practice-test program that had already covered the Scholastic Assessment Test and Joint Entrance Examination Main. (workspaceupdates.googleblog.com) (financialexpress.com) A practice test is a narrow use for a chatbot: one prompt, one exam, one scoring flow. The reported “Your Day” feature points in the opposite direction, with Gemini surfacing reminders and updates before a user asks. (workspaceupdates.googleblog.com) (9to5google.com) 9to5Google reported on April 13 that code in Google app beta version 17.14 points to a Gemini-powered “Your Day” experience. The report said the feature could pull from services including Gmail and past Gemini chats, echoing older Google Now and Assistant Snapshot briefing screens. (9to5google.com) (droid-life.com) Google has not announced “Your Day” publicly, and teardown reports describe software still under development rather than a shipping product. Business Standard’s follow-up on April 14 also framed the feed as a possible addition, not a confirmed launch. (9to5google.com) (business-standard.com) As Gemini spreads across Google services, Google’s own help pages say users can separately control “smart features in Google Workspace” and “smart features in other Google products.” Those settings affect experiences such as Gemini in Workspace, events pulled from Gmail into Calendar, and personalized suggestions in other Google products. (support.google.com 1) (support.google.com 2) Engadget reported on April 14 that turning those controls off reduces Gemini features but also disables older conveniences, including some spelling, grammar, and inbox-priority functions. Google’s support documentation similarly says the smart-feature settings govern more than one product behavior at a time. (engadget.com) (support.google.com) On Android, Google help guidance says users can also switch their default digital assistant back to Google Assistant from Gemini through the “Digital assistants from Google” setting. That leaves Google pushing Gemini in two directions at once: as a specialized tool for test prep and as a broader layer across the company’s apps. (support.google.com)
