Upwork moves into ChatGPT

Upwork is now integrated inside ChatGPT so businesses can describe projects, draft job posts and then move hires into Upwork’s marketplace from within the AI interface — a discovery shortcut employers can use to find freelance and junior help. That means first-time marketers should expect more hiring to start inside AI‑assisted workflows rather than only on traditional job boards, shifting the importance toward clear service descriptions and portfolio links. A hiring manager can now start inside ChatGPT, type a project in plain English, and get routed into Upwork without opening a job board first. Upwork said on April 9, 2026 that its new ChatGPT app lets businesses describe work, discover talent, and draft job posts from inside the chat window. (upwork.com) The handoff matters because ChatGPT is becoming a front door, not just a writing tool. OpenAI’s help center says “apps in ChatGPT” are built so people can search, reference, and work faster without leaving the conversation. (help.openai.com) Upwork is not plugging in a directory of names and stopping there. Its release says ChatGPT sends the customer into the Upwork Marketplace, where Upwork’s AI tool Uma helps scope projects, generate contracts, and start work. (upwork.com) That is a different hiring path from the old one. Instead of opening LinkedIn, Indeed, or Upwork first and then figuring out the brief, a manager can now figure out the brief while talking to the artificial intelligence system and only move to the marketplace when the job post is half-written. (help.openai.com) (upwork.com) Upwork has been building toward this for years. In 2023, it launched a partnership with OpenAI around pre-vetted OpenAI experts and said it was already adding artificial-intelligence job post generation, chat features, and proposal tips into its own platform. (upwork.com) By 2026, Upwork was pitching itself less as a freelancer listing site and more as a “human and AI-powered work marketplace.” Its homepage says more than 800,000 clients use the platform, and its February 2026 skills report said demand for top artificial intelligence skills more than doubled as AI spread into everyday work. (upwork.com 1) (upwork.com 2) That helps explain why the first jobs pulled through ChatGPT are likely to be short, clearly scoped tasks. A chat interface is good at turning “I need a landing page,” “I need help with Google Ads,” or “I need a sales deck by Friday” into a cleaner brief than many first-time buyers would write on their own. (upwork.com 1) (upwork.com 2) It also changes what freelancers have to optimize for. If the first screen a buyer sees is a ChatGPT-generated summary of the work, then clear service descriptions, narrow specialties, and portfolio links become easier for software to match than vague claims like “full-stack marketer” or “creative expert.” (upwork.com) (help.openai.com) For junior workers, this could cut two ways at once. ChatGPT can help a small business write a better brief, which may create more small contracts, but it can also push buyers toward faster comparisons and tighter scopes, which usually rewards candidates with proof of work ready to click. (upwork.com 1) (upwork.com 2) OpenAI and Upwork are both telling the same story from opposite sides. OpenAI is adding more “apps” so work starts inside ChatGPT, and Upwork is making sure that when the work turns into a hiring decision, its marketplace is one of the places the conversation lands.
