Anthropic Labeled 'Supply-Chain Risk'
AI firm Anthropic is now labeled a supply-chain risk by the U.S. government, jeopardizing its federal contracts. The designation follows the CEO's refusal of Pentagon demands and comes just as the company's app tops U.S. app stores, highlighting a growing tension between AI ethics and national security interests.
The standoff escalated after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei publicly refused a demand from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to remove ethical safeguards from its AI model, Claude. The Pentagon had requested unrestricted use for all "lawful military applications," but Amodei held firm on prohibitions against use for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons, stating the technology is not yet reliable enough for such applications. This designation is the first of its kind for a U.S. technology company, a measure typically reserved for foreign adversaries. The directive not only terminates Anthropic's existing contracts, including one worth up to $200 million, but also prohibits any contractor or partner doing business with the military from conducting commercial activity with Anthropic. The government has given a six-month phase-out period for its agencies to stop using the technology. In response to the designation, Anthropic has stated it will challenge the action in court, calling it "legally unsound." CEO Dario Amodei has argued that the vast majority of their customers will be unaffected by the move, which primarily targets work directly linked to Defense Department contracts. The controversy has seemingly boosted Anthropic's public profile, with its Claude app surging to the top of Apple's free app rankings following the dispute. The company reported that its free user base has jumped over 60% since January, and the number of paying subscribers has more than doubled in 2026. The move has drawn criticism from some corners of the tech industry, with major players like Amazon, Nvidia, and Apple warning the government against the broad use of such designations for U.S. companies, fearing it could stifle innovation. In the wake of the dispute, rival OpenAI, whose CEO Sam Altman expressed support for Anthropic's ethical red lines, announced it had secured its own deal with the military.
