Measles cases rising in Japan

Japan has recorded 236 measles cases since January, a figure 3.6 times higher than the same period in 2025, according to reporting in The Straits Times. The piece also reiterated Japan’s standard two-dose measles-rubella vaccination schedule for children (straitstimes.com). U.S. reporting adds that Idaho and Utah are seeing outbreak activity this year, with nine cases in Idaho and 583 confirmed cases in Utah since the outbreak began, underlining continuing measles spread internationally and domestically ( ).

Japan has logged 236 measles cases since January, its highest early-year count in years and 3.6 times the same period in 2025. (straitstimes.com) The Straits Times, citing Japan’s national health research body, reported the figure on April 14 after medical institutions nationwide confirmed 34 cases in the week from March 30 to April 5 alone. (straitstimes.com) Measles spreads through the air, and Japan’s health ministry says people without immunity are infected at very high rates after exposure. The ministry says fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes typically appear first, followed by rash and high fever. (mhlw.go.jp) Japan’s health ministry says handwashing and masks do not prevent measles on their own, and it calls measles-containing vaccination the most effective protection. The ministry says one dose produces immunity in about 95% of people, and two doses strengthen protection and lower the risk of severe illness and onward spread. (mhlw.go.jp) Japan’s standard measles-rubella schedule gives children two shots, one at age 1 and a second in the year before elementary school, according to the same ministry guidance cited in current coverage. (straitstimes.com; mhlw.go.jp) Japan was verified by the World Health Organization’s Western Pacific office as having eliminated endemic measles in 2015, but the health ministry says outbreaks have continued to occur from imported cases. (mhlw.go.jp) The rise in Japan comes as health departments in the United States are also tracking active spread. Utah’s measles response page says transmission is ongoing in the state, and a state dashboard posted last week shows 583 cases in the 2025-2026 outbreak. (utah.gov; utah.gov) Idaho health officials issued an exposure alert on April 9 for Boise Airport after a person with measles passed through on March 29. State guidance says measles can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. (idaho.gov; idaho.gov) Japan’s increase does not mean endemic transmission has returned, but it does show how quickly imported cases can seed clusters when the virus reaches people without full protection. Health agencies in Japan and the United States are giving the same basic advice: check vaccination records and call ahead before visiting a clinic if symptoms appear.
