Apple Preps $599 MacBook Neo

Apple is reportedly launching a new entry-level laptop, the colorful 13-inch MacBook Neo, for just $599. Tom Warren reports it will feature the new A18 Pro chip but will be limited to 8GB of non-upgradable RAM.

This move signals a significant strategy shift for Apple, re-entering a market segment it once dominated with the original polycarbonate MacBook. That model, aimed at consumers and education, was historically Apple's best-selling Mac and helped establish its laptop presence before the MacBook Air eventually took over the entry-level slot. The MacBook Neo appears aimed directly at the education sector, a market where Google's Chromebooks have a commanding presence, holding over 60% of the global education device market. Apple's share in K-12 has declined significantly as school districts have favored the lower price point and cloud-based management of Chromebooks. Achieving the $599 price involves notable trade-offs, a departure from Apple's premium-only positioning in the laptop space. Using an A-series chip from the iPhone line instead of the more powerful, custom M-series silicon found in current MacBooks is a primary cost-saving measure, alongside rumored reductions in port options and display technology. The A18 Pro chip, built on a second-generation 3-nanometer process, features a 6-core CPU and a 6-core GPU. Benchmarks indicate its single-core CPU performance is comparable to Apple's M3 chip, while its multi-core performance is closer to the M1, making it more than capable for everyday web browsing, document creation, and light photo editing. This strategy aims to broaden Apple's addressable market, creating a new entry point to its ecosystem for students, first-time laptop buyers, and iPhone owners who have been hesitant to pay the premium for a MacBook Air or Pro. The move is timed as competitors reportedly face rising memory and component costs, potentially creating a market opening for a value-positioned Mac.
