Svalbard Arctic Expeditions Launch

Adventure Canada announced two new 8-day Svalbard expeditions for 2027, departing May 18-25 and June 1-8 during the midnight sun peak. The Norwegian archipelago trips target polar wildlife viewing and dramatic Arctic landscapes. The expeditions are part of Adventure Canada's "Svalbard: North to the Midnight Sun" series designed for remote adventure seekers.

- The expedition will be aboard the Ocean Albatros, an ice-class vessel designed for polar exploration. The trip begins with a charter flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen, where guests will board the ship. - The "midnight sun" in Svalbard, where the sun doesn't set, lasts from approximately mid-April to late August. The expeditions are timed to coincide with the peak of this phenomenon around the summer solstice in June. - These expeditions will be among the first to operate under new, stricter environmental regulations implemented in Svalbard in 2025. These rules include a ban on ships with more than 200 passengers in protected areas, restrictions on landing sites to 43 designated locations, and mandated minimum distances from wildlife such as polar bears and walruses. - The diverse geology of Svalbard creates a variety of unique landscapes that may be explored, from the jagged mountain ridges of Hornsund to the gentler, reddish-colored slopes of Woodfjorden, which are colored by Devonian sandstone. - Tourism in Svalbard has seen significant growth, with the number of guest nights in Longyearbyen roughly doubling between 2010 and 2019. The number of cruise passengers also doubled in a similar timeframe. - The itinerary for these expeditions is flexible and dependent on ice and weather conditions. Potential destinations include Northwest Svalbard National Park, the islands of Sjuøyane (some of the northernmost land on Earth), and Kongsfjorden, a hub for Arctic research. - A visit to Ny-Ålesund, the world's northernmost permanent civilian settlement, is also part of the planned itinerary. This location is a key international center for Arctic research, focusing on climate, ecosystems, and the atmosphere.
