Usyk's WBC Title Now at Stake vs Verhoeven
Oleksandr Usyk's May clash with Dutch kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven in Egypt will now have Usyk's WBC heavyweight title on the line after a major WBC decision reversal. This makes Verhoeven's boxing debut incredibly high-stakes and extends Usyk's record-setting run of major defenses. The fight was already generating massive hype, but now carries legitimate world championship implications.
The WBC's sanctioning of the fight hinges on a "voluntary defense" provision granted to Usyk at the organization's 63rd Annual Convention. The board cited Usyk's unprecedented recent activity, including victories over Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, and Daniel Dubois, as a key factor in approving the crossover bout for the title. Rico Verhoeven, known as the "King of Kickboxing," brings a formidable combat sports resume, having dominated the Glory heavyweight kickboxing division for over a decade. He amassed a record of 66 wins in 76 kickboxing matches before announcing his departure from the sport. However, Verhoeven's professional boxing experience is minimal, consisting of a single fight in 2014 which he won by knockout. This creates a stark contrast between the challenger's decorated kickboxing history and his near-novice status in a professional boxing ring. Adding a layer of intrigue to Verhoeven's corner is trainer Peter Fury, the uncle of and former trainer to Tyson Fury. Peter Fury is renowned for masterminding Tyson's 2015 victory over Wladimir Klitschko, and will now strategize to upset one of Tyson's biggest rivals. The historic event, branded as "Glory in Giza," will be the first-ever professional boxing title fight held at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. The fight is scheduled for May 23rd and will be broadcast globally on DAZN. The winner of the bout will be contractually obligated to face the WBC mandatory challenger next. The current interim champion and next in line for a title shot is Agit Kabayel.
