OpenAI nonprofit pledges $1B

OpenAI’s nonprofit arm will spend at least $1 billion on AI‑related projects over the next year and has named new leaders including Woj Zaremba to head the effort — signalling a major philanthropic push alongside aggressive commercial moves. The funding plan was announced as OpenAI expands enterprise and public‑benefit initiatives. (reuters.com; bloomberg.com)

Bret Taylor is listed as chair of the OpenAI Foundation’s board and framed the announcement as follow‑on work enabled by last fall’s recapitalization that gave the Foundation access to substantial resources. (openai.com) The Foundation outlined four stated pillars for its activity — Life Sciences & Curing Diseases, Jobs & Economic Impact, AI Resilience, and Community Programs — and said its initial work will feed into a previously announced $25 billion effort focused on health and resilience. (openai.com) Jacob Trefethen was named Head of Life Sciences & Curing Diseases and OpenAI’s announcement says he is joining from Coefficient Giving, where he oversaw more than $500 million in grantmaking to science and health. (openai.com) OpenAI’s release lists Alzheimer’s research as an early programmatic priority — citing mapping disease pathways, detecting clinical biomarkers, accelerating personalized treatments and exploring repurposing of FDA‑approved molecules. (openai.com) The Foundation signalled that its AI resilience work will centre on technical measures around biosecurity and broader safety, and it is appointing senior technical staff to run those resilience programs. (bloomberg.com) The recapitalization that enabled the Foundation’s funding push left the nonprofit with an equity stake in the new OpenAI Group PBC valued at roughly $130 billion, while Microsoft holds about a 27% stake in the for‑profit entity. (cnbc.com) OpenAI said the Foundation’s activity will be delivered through external grants and programs and that it will publish further updates on grantmaking and program launches in the months ahead.
