Hims pivots after crackdown

Regulators halted Hims & Hers Health’s sale of compounded weight‑loss drugs, prompting the company to pivot toward distributing branded Wegovy through Novo Nordisk while facing new retail competition such as Amazon Pharmacy. Hims & Hers is shifting its weight-loss business toward branded Wegovy after federal regulators moved against mass-marketed compounded GLP-1 copies. (fda.gov) The Food and Drug Administration said on February 6, 2026, that it would restrict active ingredients used in non-approved compounded GLP-1 drugs and named Hims & Hers among the companies marketing them as alternatives to approved medicines. (fda.gov) Days earlier, Hims & Hers had launched a compounded semaglutide pill at prices starting at $49 a month, then pulled it after talks with industry stakeholders, according to company statements carried by Yahoo Finance. (finance.yahoo.com) The backdrop was a supply change that had been building for months. The Food and Drug Administration said on February 21, 2025, that the semaglutide injection shortage was resolved, and by April 24, 2025, a federal court ruling ended one key period of enforcement discretion for state-licensed compounders. (fda.gov, fda.gov) As branded supply returned, Novo Nordisk and Hims & Hers announced a long-term collaboration on April 29, 2025, to route self-pay patients to NovoCare Pharmacy for all dose strengths of Food and Drug Administration-approved Wegovy. Novo Nordisk said the cash price was $499 a month. (news.hims.com, prnewswire.com) That arrangement did not end Hims & Hers’ dependence on compounded drugs overnight. In its February 23, 2026 annual results, the company said its 2026 outlook assumed the ongoing ability to provide access to compounded semaglutide through at least part of the year. (investors.hims.com) Weight loss had become material to the company before the crackdown. Hims & Hers said it generated about $2.35 billion in 2025 revenue, up 59% from a year earlier, and ended the year with more than 2.5 million subscribers. (investors.hims.com) The market around it is also getting more crowded. Amazon offers Wegovy through Amazon Pharmacy and says One Medical patients can request a GLP-1 renewal for weight loss, with medication delivered through Amazon Pharmacy if eligible. (pharmacy.amazon.com, health.amazon.com) Novo Nordisk has framed the change as a move away from what it calls “knock-off” products and toward “authentic, FDA-approved Wegovy,” while the Food and Drug Administration has said compounded versions cannot be marketed as the same as approved drugs. Hims & Hers, for its part, has kept arguing that patients need affordable access and personalized care. (finance.yahoo.com, fda.gov, investors.hims.com) For Hims & Hers, the pivot leaves a simpler business to explain and a harder one to win: selling access, coaching and convenience around branded obesity drugs that more rivals can now dispense.
