HawkEye 360 Wins $75M European EW Contract

HawkEye 360, a specialist in electronic warfare data analytics, announced it was selected by a European Ministry of Defense for an EW program valued at up to $75 million. The deal underscores continued European investment in space-based intelligence and electronic warfare capabilities.

HawkEye 360 utilizes a constellation of small satellites flying in formation to detect and geolocate radio frequency (RF) signals. Their system employs time difference of arrival (TDOA) and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) techniques to pinpoint the source of a wide range of transmissions, including maritime and aviation signals, communications, and other electronic emissions. This provides a layer of geospatial intelligence that is independent of traditional optical or radar imagery. The contract will provide the undisclosed European nation with a subscription to HawkEye 360's Air Defense and GPS Interference Monitoring services. This allows the customer to monitor and assess these specific activities within their areas of interest, creating a consistent operational picture that can supplement their existing national defense capabilities. The use of commercial, unclassified RF data also facilitates easier sharing of intelligence with allies and coalition partners. The company's constellation currently consists of 21 satellites, but HawkEye 360 aims to expand it to 60 satellites, grouped in 20 clusters of three. The most recent launch, Cluster 13, occurred in January 2026. This expansion is driven by increasing demand from government clients for more frequent revisits and broader global coverage to monitor activities and support timely decision-making. This agreement is part of a larger trend of European nations investing in space-based intelligence to enhance strategic autonomy. The European Defence Fund has been actively promoting the development of dual-use satellite technologies for applications like border and maritime surveillance. However, the reliance on a non-European provider like HawkEye 360 also highlights ongoing discussions within Europe about technological sovereignty versus leveraging allied capabilities.
