Max Holloway clarified his "point down" rules ahead of UFC 326 vs. Charles Oliveira 2 on March 7 — if he's winning in the last 10 seconds, no retreating, shooting, or clinching allowed. He calls it a "Hail Mary" stand-up shot opportunity for opponents.
This rematch at UFC 326 is over a decade in the making, stemming from an anticlimactic first encounter in August 2015. In that fight, Max Holloway was awarded a TKO victory at just 1:39 of the first round after Charles Oliveira suffered a neck and shoulder injury while defending a takedown. Holloway's "point down" gesture originated in a 2016 bout against Ricardo Lamas. After Lamas taunted him for what he perceived as coasting, Holloway invited him to a slugfest in the center of the octagon for the final 10 seconds, a challenge Lamas accepted. Holloway has since said the gesture is a commitment to "stay there and swing," rooted in the warrior spirit of his native Waianae, Hawaii. The gesture reached its most iconic moment at UFC 300, when Holloway pointed down and then knocked out Justin Gaethje with one second remaining to win the "BMF" title. That knockout has become one of the most viral highlights in UFC history. This bout presents a classic striker versus grappler matchup. Holloway holds UFC records for the most significant strikes landed in a career, while Oliveira holds the records for the most submission wins (17) and most overall finishes (21) in UFC history. Oddsmakers have installed Holloway as the favorite, with betting lines around -215 to -230. Analysts predict that if the fight remains standing, Holloway's relentless volume and legendary cardio will be the deciding factor, with some predicting a late-round TKO victory for him. Oliveira's clearest path to victory is believed to be on the ground. His elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu could pose a significant threat if he is able to get the fight to the mat and bypass Holloway's historically strong takedown defense.
