In contrast, the 28-year-old Sebastian Fundora has been significantly more active, recently securing and defending the title that Thurman now seeks. The path to this fight has been indirect and marked by setbacks. Thurman was originally slated to face Tim Tszyu in March 2024, but a bicep injury forced him to withdraw. Fundora, who was scheduled to fight on the undercard, stepped in on short notice and defeated Tszyu in a bloody battle to become the new champion. This matchup itself was initially scheduled for October 25, 2025, but was postponed after Fundora suffered a hand injury during training camp. The rescheduled March 28 showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas is the culmination of these unforeseen events. Known as "The Towering Inferno," Fundora presents a unique physical challenge with his staggering 6-foot-5 ½ inch frame, a significant anomaly in the 154-pound division. His last outing was a third-round TKO victory over Brock Jarvis in March 2025, a fight intended to set up a clash with Tszyu. This fight headlines a Premier Boxing Champions event on Prime Video Pay-Per-View. The undercard features an IBF heavyweight title eliminator between Frank Sanchez and Richard Torrez Jr., as well as matchups at middleweight and super middleweight.
