Novartis CEO on Platform-Driven Transformation

Novartis CEO Vasant Narasimhan explained how the company transformed by spinning off non-core businesses to focus on three core platform technologies. He emphasized a "relentless focus on what we could do best" as key to unlocking value and scaling impact.

- The company's focus on three core technologies includes xRNA therapies, radioligand therapy (which uses radioactive atoms to target and kill cancer cells), and advanced gene and cell therapies. This strategic shift was enabled by the spin-off of its generics and biosimilars division, Sandoz. - Novartis is heavily investing in AI across its R&D pipeline, with over 100 use cases in development. A key initiative is the "Intelligent Decision System" called Frontier, a "computational twin" that creates a digital simulation of the clinical trial process to optimize design and execution. - The company's AI innovation lab is developing algorithms that can predict which molecular compounds are most likely to succeed in clinical trials by analyzing historical data patterns, aiming to significantly accelerate timelines. - To support its AI ambitions, Novartis has built a modular, "plug-and-play" data platform on AWS. This architecture allows for the easy swapping of components and has already led to a 72% improvement in query speed for patient safety data analysis. - A core component of the cultural transformation is the "unbossed" environment, which flips the traditional management pyramid to a "servant leader" model where managers support and empower their teams to take risks and experiment. - For career growth, Novartis has implemented a "career lattice" model, moving away from a linear career ladder. This is powered by an internal AI-driven talent marketplace called "Talent Match" which provides employees with personalized recommendations for projects, mentorships, and open roles across the entire company. - This talent marketplace has led to a 67% increase in cross-functional project assignments, allowing engineers and other employees to gain a wider range of experience. One IT employee, for example, has held six different roles in two countries over eight years. - To further develop technical talent, Novartis offers an "AI for Life" residency program and a postdoctoral research program at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). The company also provides employees with access to over 16,000 courses on LinkedIn Learning and 4,500 on Coursera to support continuous upskilling.
