Florida Expands Hiking Trail Network

Santa Rosa County, Florida is expanding its hiking and biking trails along with kayak and canoe launches as part of a broader initiative to enhance outdoor recreation access. The push provides more opportunities for hiking and nature exploration in the region's natural spaces.

- The county's 2026 capital improvement plan includes 14 approved projects with a budget of approximately $10 million. - A significant project is the renovation of the Oriole Beach Boat Ramp, which is estimated to cost nearly $2 million and is scheduled to begin in March 2026 with completion expected by September 2027. - Funding for the Oriole Beach Boat Ramp renovation will come from an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant, with an additional $100,000 from county sales tax revenues. - Another key project is the construction of new parking and restrooms at Navarre Beach, with a projected cost of $2.2 million. - In a partnership with the county, The Longleaf Alliance will assist with trail development, repairs, signage, and the creation of new kayak launches within Santa Rosa County Preserves. - A new boardwalk, including retail spaces and a community event area, is planned for Navarre Beach with a $5.5 million budget funded by tourist development tax reserves. - Effective February 1, 2026, Santa Rosa County will implement a new fee structure for rentals at county parks, pavilions, and community centers. - The county recently secured over 400 acres of land, including a 40-acre lake near NAS Whiting Field, which will be used for public passive recreation and the restoration of longleaf pine habitat.
