Perkins&Will converts corporate complex in Madrid
Perkins&Will has completed the conversion of a former corporate complex in Madrid into a people-focused workplace. The adaptive reuse project emphasizes employee wellbeing and collaboration, transforming an insular corporate environment into a more open and integrated campus. The design serves as a case study for modernizing aging corporate real estate.
- The project, which serves as the new global headquarters for the infrastructure and renewable energy company ACCIONA, is located on a 10-hectare site and provides facilities for 4,000 employees. - This adaptive reuse project involved the extensive renovation of two 1970s buildings and the addition of a new building designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architects, with Perkins&Will responsible for the interior designs. - The campus has achieved both LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum certifications, reflecting its high standards for environmental performance and employee well-being. - Sustainability is a core theme, with the campus running entirely on renewable energy through on-site solar panels and geothermal systems. The landscape design includes the preservation of historic pine groves and the addition of 1,000 new trees and 20,000 shrubs, prioritizing native species to reduce water consumption. - The interior design, led by Perkins&Will Design Lead Mijail Gutierrez, contrasts raw materials like concrete and brick with refined elements to create a light-filled environment that reduces the need for artificial lighting. - Technological innovations were also incorporated into the design, such as 3D-printed joinery and the use of robotics for logistics and security. - The project, which began in September 2019 and was completed in March 2025, serves as a case study in converting aging corporate real estate into modern, sustainable, and people-centric workplaces.
