Ericsson Backs Open-Source 5G/6G Initiative

Ericsson is joining the Linux Foundation's OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation as a founding member to advance open-source wireless technology. The move signals a major push for more flexible, secure, and interoperable Radio Access Network (RAN) systems, a key component for future 5G and 6G networks in the U.S.

The OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation is a public-private partnership aimed at creating a foundational, open-source software stack for the Centralized Unit (CU) and Distributed Unit (DU), which are key programmable elements of the RAN. This initiative, backed by the Linux Foundation, intends to establish a "Linux of RAN" to prevent vendor lock-in and foster a more diverse and competitive telecommunications market. Founding members include industry heavyweights like AMD, AT&T, Nokia, NVIDIA, and Verizon, signaling a broad consensus on the need for open architecture. Ericsson's role as a founding premier member and board member of the OCUDU Foundation marks a significant evolution in its strategy. The company, which had previously expressed reservations about the maturity of Open RAN, is now a key driver of its industrialization. This shift is highlighted by its landmark $14 billion Open RAN deal with AT&T, which aims to have 70% of AT&T's wireless traffic flowing through open platforms by late 2026. The initiative is not just about open interfaces; it's about building an AI-native foundation for 6G. An AI-native network will move beyond just providing connectivity to enabling real-time sensing, inference at the edge, and intelligent resource management. This will support data-intensive, low-latency applications such as autonomous vehicle fleet management, real-time digital twins, smart factories, and holographic communication. The OCUDU project originated from an investment by the U.S. Department of Defense's FutureG Office, highlighting its strategic importance for national security. The foundation will facilitate the dual use of commercial 5G and 6G technologies for defense applications, ensuring a secure and resilient telecommunications ecosystem. This collaboration between government and industry aims to accelerate innovation to meet mission-critical requirements.
